The split-face stone finish exposes the natural break of the material and creates a rough, irregular and deeply textured surface. Prepared stone pieces are divided by controlled mechanical pressure, usually applied with upper and lower blades. The stone separates along its internal structure, and every piece develops a slightly different relief.
Unlike polished, honed or sawn surfaces, split-face is not flat. Its natural projections create depth and changing shadows across a wall. The allowable surface depth, remaining base thickness and edge condition should be defined before production, especially for façade panels.
Split-face stone is mainly used for vertical applications, including exterior façades, garden walls, villas, entrance walls, columns and decorative interior cladding. Because of its irregular surface, it is generally unsuitable for countertops and normal pedestrian flooring.
