About This Material

Pietra Grey Honed Marble

Pietra Grey Honed is a dark grey Iranian marble with a smooth matte surface and fine white veins. The honed finish reduces reflection while preserving the natural color and mineral pattern of the stone. This makes the material suitable for interior flooring, stairs, walls, bathrooms and architectural elements where a non-glossy stone surface is required.

What Is Pietra Grey Honed?

Pietra Grey Honed is produced from natural Pietra Grey marble, known as Lashotor marble in Iran. Its background normally ranges from dark grey to charcoal. Fine white calcite veins cross the stone in different directions and create the recognizable appearance of this Iranian marble.

Color, vein thickness and mineral distribution can vary between blocks and quarry layers. These differences are natural characteristics of marble. For large orders, a physical sample should be approved to define the required color range, vein distribution and surface quality.

How Is the Honed Finish Produced?

The surface of Pietra Grey Honed is ground with progressively finer abrasive tools. Unlike polishing, the process stops before the stone develops a reflective shine. The result is a flat, smooth and matte surface with low light reflection.

Honing may make the grey background appear slightly lighter than polished Pietra Grey. The veins remain visible, but their contrast may look softer because the matte surface distributes light rather than reflecting it directly.

Main characteristics of the honed finish

  • Smooth and uniform stone face
  • Matte appearance with low reflection
  • Dark grey to charcoal background
  • Natural white calcite veins
  • Lower visibility of fingerprints
  • Small daily marks are less noticeable than on polished marble

Advantages of Pietra Grey Honed Marble

Pietra Grey Honed provides several practical benefits when properly selected and installed:

  • Controlled reflection: the matte surface reduces glare from windows and artificial lighting.
  • Natural stone appearance: the dark background and white veins remain visible without mirror-like reflection.
  • Practical maintenance: fingerprints and minor surface marks are generally less visible than on polished marble.
  • Material coordination: the grey color works with wood, glass, concrete, metal and light-colored stone.
  • Custom production: the stone can be produced as tiles, steps, wall panels and cut-to-size pieces.

A honed surface may provide more grip than a highly polished surface, but it must not be described as completely non-slip without appropriate testing. Slip performance depends on water, contamination, footwear, slope, cleaning and installation conditions.

Applications of Pietra Grey Honed

Pietra Grey Honed can be considered for a range of residential and commercial applications:

  • Interior marble flooring
  • Entrance halls and reception areas
  • Stair treads and risers
  • Interior wall cladding
  • Fireplace surrounds
  • Bathroom walls and selected bathroom floors
  • Hotel and office corridors
  • Retail and exhibition interiors
  • Custom architectural components

For wet areas, stone selection, waterproofing, substrate preparation, joint design, sealing and drainage must be considered together. Honing does not make marble waterproof or completely slip-resistant.

Interior and Exterior Use

For interior spaces, Pietra Grey Honed provides a dark natural stone surface without the strong reflection of polished marble. It can be used in both compact rooms and large commercial spaces when thickness, installation and expected traffic are properly specified.

Exterior use should be evaluated according to climate, water exposure, stone thickness, fixing system, drainage and freeze-thaw conditions. A honed finish alone does not make marble suitable for every exterior environment. Current test reports from the intended production lot should be reviewed for demanding exterior projects.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Pietra Grey is a calcitic marble and may be etched by acidic substances. Recommended care includes:

  • Use a pH-neutral cleaner made for natural marble.
  • Avoid vinegar, acidic cleaners and aggressive chemicals.
  • Clean oil, coffee and colored liquids quickly.
  • Use soft cleaning equipment that will not scratch the surface.
  • Apply a compatible penetrating sealer when required.
  • Test cleaning and sealing products on a sample first.

A sealer may reduce moisture penetration and staining but cannot make the stone completely waterproof. Additional information is available from the Natural Stone Institute.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is honed Pietra Grey completely non-slip?

No. It may provide more grip than polished marble, but project-specific slip testing is required for critical walking areas.

Does honing change the color?

Honing does not change the stone itself, but the matte surface may make the grey background appear slightly lighter than a polished surface.

Can it be used in bathrooms?

It can be considered for bathroom walls and selected floors when waterproofing, sealing, drainage, cleaning and slip requirements are properly specified.

Can Karimi Stone produce custom sizes?

Yes. Slabs, tiles, steps, risers, wall panels and other pieces can be produced according to approved drawings.

Slip Rating & Wet Pendulum Guide

A concise overview of P1–P5 slip ratings so you can align each Karimi Stone finish with the right space, moisture level and safety expectation.

OVERVIEW

P1 → P5 safety band
P1 P2 P3 P4 P5
What the Wet Pendulum Test (WPT) tells you
The WPT measures how slippery a surface becomes when wet. Each finish is given a P rating from P1 (higher slip risk) through to P5 (maximum grip). As the number increases, the expected slip resistance also increases.

RATING SCALE SNAPSHOT

From higher slip risk to maximum grip
Each Karimi Stone P icon below is your quick visual code before checking detailed applications.

P1 → P5  Left = smoother | Right = more textured

P1

Dry circulation

Higher slip risk

For dry-only walkways and light traffic areas where water is not expected on the surface.

P2

Light splash

Occasional moisture
Bathrooms, small kitchens and transition areas that see brief, easily managed water.
P3

Everyday wet public

Balanced grip
Entries, amenities, undercover car parks and fresh food retail where wet floors are common.
P4
