Acid Washed

The acid-washed stone finish is a secondary chemical treatment that creates a lightly etched, matte and irregular surface. A controlled acidic solution reacts with acid-sensitive minerals and removes a very thin layer from the stone. The surface is then thoroughly neutralized, rinsed and cleaned according to the production procedure.

Acid washing is most effective on calcium-carbonate stones such as many limestones, marbles and travertines. The result depends on the stone’s mineral composition, acid concentration, exposure time and existing finish. Different minerals may react at different rates and create natural variations across the surface.

Acid-washed stone may be used for façades, patios, courtyards and selected exterior flooring. Although the etched texture can provide more grip than polishing, slip resistance must be tested. This treatment is unsuitable for some stones and must only be performed under controlled factory conditions with appropriate safety and wastewater-management systems.
