About This Material

Red Granite Honed: Properties, Applications and Global Supply

Red Granite Honed is an Iranian natural stone with a smooth, matte and low-glare surface. It retains the warm red colour and natural mineral pattern of granite without the strong reflection created by a polished finish.

The combination of a dense crystalline structure and a non-glossy surface makes Red Granite Honed suitable for interior flooring, walls, staircases, countertops, lift interiors and selected exterior applications.

Negin Sang Karimi (Karimi Stone) processes and supplies Iranian Red Granite in slabs, tiles, free-length pieces, steps, risers and custom-cut dimensions for domestic and international projects.

What Is Red Granite?

Red Granite is an intrusive igneous rock formed when molten rock cools and crystallises slowly below the Earth’s surface. This geological process creates a dense structure that generally provides good mechanical strength and abrasion resistance.

The red colour is often associated with potassium-rich feldspar and iron-bearing minerals. Quartz, mica and black, white or grey mineral grains may also appear across the surface.

Because granite is a natural material, its shade, grain size and mineral pattern can vary between blocks and production lots. More information is available in the Iranian Red Granite guide.

How Is Red Granite Honed?

A honed finish is produced through several stages of mechanical grinding. Abrasive tools remove saw marks and make the stone flat and smooth. However, the process stops before the final polishing stages that would create a glossy surface.

As a result, Red Granite Honed has a smooth, matte and low-reflection appearance. Honing changes the surface texture but does not alter the stone’s internal strength.

The final colour depth and degree of smoothness depend on the abrasive sequence, production settings and mineral composition of the selected lot.

Main Benefits of Red Granite Honed

Matte and Low-Glare Appearance

The honed finish reflects less light than polished granite. This allows the natural red tones and dark mineral grains to remain visible without a mirror-like reflection.

Reduced Visibility of Dust and Marks

Footprints, fingerprints, light dust and small surface marks are generally less noticeable on Red Granite Honed than on a highly polished surface.

High Mechanical Strength

Red Granite has a dense crystalline structure. With suitable thickness, correct substrate preparation and professional installation, it can withstand regular traffic and mechanical loads.

Relatively Low Water Absorption

The dense structure can provide relatively low water absorption. However, the stone is not completely waterproof or stain-proof. Sealing, joint construction, installation and cleaning also affect performance.

Abrasion Resistance

Red Granite may provide good resistance to wear in floors, stairs and circulation areas. Actual performance should be confirmed using the current technical report for the selected production lot.

Is Red Granite Honed Slip-Resistant?

A honed surface may provide more traction than highly polished granite, but Red Granite Honed should not automatically be described as completely non-slip.

Actual slip resistance depends on the honing level, surface contamination, water, cleaning products, footwear and installation slope. Bathrooms, ramps, entrances, pool surrounds and public stairs require a relevant slip-resistance test.

Quality Control and Export Packaging

Before packing, the quality-control team can inspect dimensions, thickness, surface flatness, honing consistency, colour range, edge straightness, visible cracks, chips and compliance with approved samples.

Products can be packed in wooden crates, wooden pallets, wooden bundles, iron pallets or iron bundles. Protective separators, corner protection and secure strapping reduce movement during transport.

Cleaning and Maintenance

  • Use clean water and a pH-neutral natural-stone cleaner.
  • Remove oil, food and coloured liquids promptly.
  • Avoid strong acids, alkaline chemicals and abrasive cleaners.
  • Do not use rough pads that may alter the honed finish.
  • Use cutting boards and trivets on countertops.
  • Test sealers on a spare piece before full application.

How to Order Red Granite Honed

To request an accurate quotation, provide the required dimensions, thickness, quantity, application, honing level, edge details, drawings, test requirements, packing method and destination port.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Red Granite Honed suitable for flooring?

Yes, it may be used for residential and commercial flooring when the thickness, substrate and technical performance meet project requirements.

Is honed granite completely non-slip?

No. It may provide more traction than polished granite, but wet and safety-sensitive areas require relevant testing.

Does Red Granite Honed need sealing?

It depends on the stone lot and application. A compatible penetrating sealer may help protect countertops and frequently used surfaces.

Can it be used outdoors?

It can be considered for exterior walls and covered areas when technical tests and engineering review confirm suitability.

Slip Rating & Wet Pendulum Guide

A concise overview of P1–P5 slip ratings so you can align each Karimi Stone finish with the right space, moisture level and safety expectation.

OVERVIEW

P1 → P5 safety band
P1 P2 P3 P4 P5
What the Wet Pendulum Test (WPT) tells you
The WPT measures how slippery a surface becomes when wet. Each finish is given a P rating from P1 (higher slip risk) through to P5 (maximum grip). As the number increases, the expected slip resistance also increases.

RATING SCALE SNAPSHOT

From higher slip risk to maximum grip
Each Karimi Stone P icon below is your quick visual code before checking detailed applications.

P1 → P5  Left = smoother | Right = more textured

P1

Dry circulation

Higher slip risk

For dry-only walkways and light traffic areas where water is not expected on the surface.

P2

Light splash

Occasional moisture
Bathrooms, small kitchens and transition areas that see brief, easily managed water.
P3

Everyday wet public

Balanced grip
Entries, amenities, undercover car parks and fresh food retail where wet floors are common.
P4

High exposure

Wet, high traffic
Pool surrounds, communal showers and external ramps under 1:14 where water is constant.
P5

Maximum grip

Highest safety band

Commercial kitchens, covered loading docks and pool ramps or stairs leading into water.

HOW TO READ THIS POPUP

Start with water, movement and consequence
Consider how wet the floor can get, how quickly people move, and how critical a slip could be. Then use the cards below to align each area of your project with a suitable P rating before you select a Karimi Stone finish.

P2
For spaces where occasional water is expected but quickly managed – like hotel bathrooms, apartment kitchens, laundries and transition zones between wet and dry areas.
Hotel bathrooms
Apartment kitchens
Laundries

P3 – regularly wet public
Balanced everyday grip

P3
Used where wet conditions are common – entries and access ways, toilet facilities in public buildings, undercover car parks and fresh food retail areas.

Variation reference cards

Near-Zero Variation – V0

Ultra-consistent tone with almost no visible shift between pieces. Ideal for gallery-like, minimal interiors where the surface should visually disappear.

Soft Variation – V1

Delicate, low-contrast changes gently break up the surface. A refined choice for calm kitchens, ensuites, and open-plan living spaces.

Moderate Variation – V2

Balanced, natural movement with visible differences in tone. Adds character and depth while staying easy to style with cabinetry and textiles.

Expressive Variation – V3

Stronger contrast from piece to piece with noticeable light and dark areas. Best when you want the surface to act as a key design feature.

High-Drama Variation – V4

Pronounced shifts in hue and tone, creating a richly patterned, statement finish. Ideal for feature walls, dramatic floors, or high-impact spaces.
