Pietra Grey Honed & Tumbled Marble
Pietra Grey Honed & Tumbled is a dark grey Iranian marble with a smooth matte surface, fine white veins and softly rounded edges. The combination of honing and tumbling creates a natural-looking stone product for interior flooring, stairs, wall cladding and selected covered exterior areas. Karimi Stone produces this material in tiles, steps and custom dimensions according to approved project specifications.

What Is Pietra Grey Honed & Tumbled?
Pietra Grey Honed & Tumbled is produced from natural Pietra Grey marble, which is known as Lashotor marble in Iran. Its color normally ranges from dark grey to charcoal and includes natural white calcite veins. The size, direction and distribution of these veins vary between individual blocks and quarry layers.
Two separate processes are used to produce the final surface. Honing creates a flat, smooth and non-reflective face. Tumbling then softens the exposed edges and corners of the pieces. The result retains the identity of Pietra Grey while creating a less rigid appearance than precisely cut, sharp-edged marble tiles.
The Honed Finish
The honed surface of Pietra Grey Honed & Tumbled is produced by mechanically grinding the marble with abrasive tools. The process stops before the final polishing stages, leaving the surface smooth but matte.
Characteristics of the honed surface
- Flat and smooth stone face
- Matte appearance with low reflection
- Dark grey to charcoal color range
- Visible white natural veins
- Less glare than polished marble
- Lower visibility of fingerprints and minor surface marks
Honing may make the grey background appear slightly lighter than polished Pietra Grey. For project production, the approved sample should establish the required color range, surface smoothness and acceptable vein distribution.

The Tumbled Process
The tumbled treatment used for Pietra Grey Honed & Tumbled primarily changes the edges and corners of the stone pieces. Depending on the required dimensions and production method, the pieces are processed in tumbling equipment with abrasive materials. Repeated movement gradually removes sharpness from the edges.
Results of the tumbled treatment
- Softened and slightly irregular edges
- Reduced sharpness at corners
- A naturally aged surface character
- Small controlled differences between individual pieces
- Compatibility with narrow or intentionally visible joints
Tumbling is not intended to create perfectly identical edges. Minor variations in corner shape, edge wear and texture are expected characteristics of this finish. The acceptable range should be agreed upon using physical samples before production.
Difference Between Honed and Tumbled Finishes
Honed and tumbled do not describe the same operation. Honing mainly affects the main face of the marble, while tumbling mainly softens its edges and corners. In Pietra Grey Honed & Tumbled, the two treatments are combined in one finished product.
| Processing | Main Effect | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Honed | Main stone surface | Smooth, flat and matte face |
| Tumbled | Edges and corners | Softened and slightly aged edges |
| Combined | Face, edges and corners | Matte marble with less rigid outlines |
Applications of Pietra Grey Honed & Tumbled
Pietra Grey Honed & Tumbled can be considered for residential, hospitality and commercial projects:
- Interior marble flooring
- Entrance halls and reception areas
- Stair treads and risers
- Interior wall cladding
- Bathroom floors and walls
- Fireplace surrounds
- Hotel and restaurant interiors
- Covered patios and terraces
- Renovation and restoration projects
For wet areas, the stone, grout, substrate, waterproofing and drainage must be specified as one complete installation system. A honed or tumbled finish does not make marble waterproof or automatically non-slip.
Design and Material Combinations
The dark grey background of Pietra Grey Honed & Tumbled can be combined with light marble, natural wood, dark metal, glass, concrete and neutral-colored surfaces. The matte face reduces glare, while the softened edges make the joint pattern more visible.
Before installation, pieces should be dry-laid and arranged to distribute the shades and veins across the area. Tumbled edges may create joints that look wider than those between sharp-edged tiles, so grout color and joint width should be approved in advance.

Available Formats and Custom Production
Karimi Stone supplies Pietra Grey Honed & Tumbled according to the required dimensions, quantity and approved sample:
- Tiles in standard and custom dimensions
- Steps and risers
- Free-length pieces
- Wall panels
- Skirting and border pieces
- Custom cut-to-size components
Tumbling is normally more suitable for tiles and medium-sized pieces than very large slabs. The available size range should therefore be confirmed before the final project specification.
Quality Control and Packing
- Checking dimensions and thickness
- Inspecting honed surface consistency
- Reviewing the amount of edge rounding
- Checking shade and vein distribution
- Inspecting visible cracks and damaged corners
- Comparing production with the approved sample
- Using separators to protect the finished surfaces
- Selecting packaging according to size, weight and destination
Cleaning and Maintenance
Pietra Grey is a calcitic marble and can react with acidic substances. Recommended care includes:
- Use a pH-neutral cleaner suitable for natural marble.
- Avoid vinegar, acidic products and aggressive chemicals.
- Clean spills before they remain on the surface for a long time.
- Use a soft brush where dirt collects around tumbled edges.
- Apply a compatible penetrating sealer when required.
- Test all cleaning and sealing products on a sample first.
A sealer can reduce moisture penetration and staining but cannot make the stone completely waterproof. Additional care information is available from the Natural Stone Institute.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are honed and tumbled the same finish?
No. Honing creates a smooth matte face, while tumbling softens the edges and corners of the pieces.
Are all tumbled edges completely identical?
No. Controlled differences in edge wear and corner shape are expected. The acceptable range should be confirmed through samples.
Is this marble suitable for wet areas?
It can be considered for selected wet areas when waterproofing, drainage, sealing, cleaning and slip requirements are properly specified.
Can custom sizes be produced?
Yes. Karimi Stone can produce tiles, steps, risers, wall pieces and other components according to approved drawings.
