Vanak Limestone Honed
Vanak Limestone Honed is an Iranian natural limestone with a light cream-to-beige background and a smooth matte surface. The honing process removes cutting marks and levels the face without creating the mirror-like reflection associated with polished stone.
Its relatively uniform color and quiet natural texture make it suitable for interior walls, flooring, stairs, entrance halls and architectural panels. Selected exterior use is also possible when the stone, fixing system and climate are properly evaluated.

What Is Vanak Limestone Honed?
Vanak Limestone Honed is produced by grinding the sawn stone with progressively finer abrasive tools. The process continues until the surface becomes flat and smooth but stops before the final polishing stage.
Compared with polished limestone, the honed finish reflects less light and generally makes dust, fingerprints and minor marks less noticeable. It may also provide more grip, although slip resistance must be tested for the intended application.
Natural Characteristics of Vanak Limestone
Vanak Limestone is sourced from the Vanak quarry area in Iran. It is known for its light color range and relatively consistent natural texture. As with every natural limestone, color, fossils, mineral points and surface markings can vary between quarry sections and blocks.
- Color range: generally light cream to beige.
- Matte surface: smooth and flat without strong reflection.
- Relatively uniform texture: suitable for coordinated architectural layouts.
- Compact structure: selected blocks provide good dimensional stability.
- Workability: suitable for slabs, tiles, panels, steps and CNC elements.
- Natural variation: exact appearance depends on the selected block and batch.
Honing Process
The production of Vanak Limestone Honed normally includes these stages:
- Block selection: checking color, cracks, fossils and structural condition.
- Primary sawing: producing slabs or strips in the required thickness.
- Calibration: controlling thickness and surface flatness.
- Grinding: removing saw marks with abrasive tools.
- Honing: developing the required smooth and matte surface.
- Dimensional cutting: producing tiles, panels, steps or custom pieces.
- Quality control: checking dimensions, finish, cracks, edges and color range.
The final appearance depends on the abrasive grade and mineral structure of the production batch. The required finish should be approved through a physical sample before large-volume production.
Benefits of the Honed Finish
- Creates a smooth surface without mirror-like glare
- Maintains the natural light cream-to-beige color
- Makes dust and footprints less noticeable than polished stone
- Generally provides more grip than a highly polished surface
- Allows easier cleaning than deeply textured finishes
- Works with modern and traditional architectural designs
A honed surface does not make Vanak Limestone Honed completely non-slip. Wet floors, public entrances and safety-sensitive applications require project-specific slip testing.
Applications of Vanak Limestone Honed
- Interior wall cladding
- Residential and commercial flooring
- Hotel lobbies and reception areas
- Entrance halls and covered corridors
- Interior steps and risers
- Decorative panels and columns
- CNC-cut architectural components
- Protected façades with an engineered fixing system
- Selected exterior walls in suitable climates
Exterior Use and Technical Evaluation
Honing changes the surface texture but does not make limestone waterproof or automatically frost-resistant. Exterior suitability depends on water absorption, strength, panel dimensions, fixing method, drainage, local climate and laboratory results for the supplied batch.
For façades, the anchor design must consider panel weight, stone thickness and installation height. Large panels should be mechanically fixed when required by the project engineer.
Sorting and Quality Control
There is no universal commercial grading system for Vanak Limestone Honed. Sorting is normally based on:
- Background color and acceptable tonal range
- Amount of fossils or mineral markings
- Surface uniformity and honing level
- Visible cracks, pores and repaired areas
- Dimensions, thickness and edge condition
- Approved sample or project mock-up
Installation, Sealing and Maintenance
- Use adhesive, mortar and grout compatible with natural limestone.
- Use light-colored setting material when necessary to avoid discoloration.
- Apply a compatible penetrating sealer where moisture or staining is expected.
- Remember that sealing reduces absorption but does not waterproof limestone.
- Test adhesive, grout and sealer on a sample before installation.
- Do not use vinegar, acidic cleaners or abrasive powders.
- Clean with a pH-neutral product intended for calcareous stone.
Additional maintenance guidance is available from the Natural Stone Institute.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is honed Vanak Limestone shiny?
No. Honing creates a flat and smooth surface without the reflection of polished stone.
Is it suitable for wet flooring?
Suitability depends on slip testing, sealing, drainage and the installation system.
Are all pieces exactly the same color?
No. Natural differences occur, but project-specific sorting can control the acceptable range.
Can Vanak Limestone be supplied in other finishes?
Yes. Polished, sandblasted, bush-hammered, brushed, split-face and other surfaces are available.
