About This Material

Gohare Sandblasted Limestone

Gohare Sandblasted is an Iranian cream limestone with a fine, matte and uniformly textured surface. The finish is produced by directing abrasive particles at the stone under controlled pressure, reducing surface reflection and increasing friction compared with polished stone.

The base stone is extracted near Khorramabad in Lorestan Province, western Iran. Its light cream-to-beige color, fine structure and occasional grey fossils make it suitable for exterior façades, interior walls, walkways, stairs and selected landscape applications.

What is Gohare Sandblasted?

Gohare Sandblasted is created by projecting abrasive particles onto a prepared limestone surface. Before blasting, the stone is normally cut, calibrated and brought to a flat sawn, semi-honed or honed condition.

The blasting process removes very small particles from the face and creates a fine roughness. Unlike polished limestone, it does not produce a glossy reflection. Compared with bush-hammered limestone, sandblasting normally creates a shallower and finer texture.

Sandblasting production process

  1. Block selection: Quarry blocks are checked for color, fossils and visible structural defects.
  2. Cutting: Blocks are converted into slabs, tiles, panels or steps.
  3. Calibration: Pieces are adjusted to the specified thickness.
  4. Surface preparation: Cutting marks and major irregularities are reduced.
  5. Sandblasting: Abrasive particles are directed onto the surface under controlled pressure.
  6. Cleaning: Dust and loose particles are removed.
  7. Inspection: Texture, dimensions, thickness and edge condition are checked.

The final appearance depends on abrasive type, particle size, pressure, nozzle distance, processing time and the number of passes. A reference sample should be approved before mass production.

Appearance and sorting

Gohare Sandblasted Limestone normally retains the natural cream, beige or greyish-cream color of Gohare limestone. However, the matte texture may make the surface appear slightly lighter than the polished version.

Natural grey fossil patterns may be visible in different concentrations:

  • Low-fossil selection: Cleaner and more uniform cream background
  • Medium-fossil selection: Moderate fossil distribution
  • High-fossil selection: More visible grey fossil markings

This classification describes visual appearance rather than a separate technical quality grade. For large façades, samples from the intended production lot should be approved to maintain coordinated color and fossil distribution.

Slip resistance and safety

The surface of Gohare Sandblasted can provide more friction than a polished finish, but it should not be described as completely non-slip. Actual performance depends on blasting intensity, moisture, contamination, footwear, slope and maintenance.

For ramps, public stairs and wet areas, slip resistance should be tested on a sample with the same surface treatment as the final supplied product.

Exterior use and cold climates

Sandblasting does not make limestone waterproof or automatically resistant to freeze–thaw cycles. Exterior suitability depends on lot-specific absorption, stone thickness, installation, drainage and climate.

In cold regions, the installation system must prevent water from remaining beneath or inside the stone. Correct slopes, drainage layers, movement joints and compatible installation materials are important.

A penetrating sealer may reduce moisture penetration and staining, but it cannot replace correct installation or make the stone completely waterproof.

Installation considerations

  • Use a stable and properly prepared substrate.
  • Provide sufficient slope for water drainage.
  • Select mortar or adhesive compatible with limestone.
  • Provide movement joints according to the project design.
  • Confirm final thickness after surface processing.
  • Use approved mechanical fixing for façade panels where required.

Cleaning and maintenance

  • Use a pH-neutral cleaner formulated for limestone.
  • Avoid vinegar, acidic cleaners and aggressive chemicals.
  • Use a soft non-metallic brush for textured surfaces.
  • Remove mud, salts and organic contamination regularly.
  • Do not use uncontrolled high-pressure washing.
  • Inspect exterior joints, drainage and anchors periodically.
